Why My Business Is Not About Me

Many of us start a business for somewhat self indulgent reasons. The business venture is invariably for, and about, us. It is about our lifestyle. It is about what we want for ourselves. It is about us determining our own income as opposed to our employer placing a monetary value on our contribution to his/her business.  We want to take charge of our own hours. We want to take control of our lives.

When I started my business in January 2011, I was certainly motivated by these same reasons. I wanted to work for myself; I wanted to define my own hours; I wanted to work from home; I wanted to earn lots of money etc. It was all about me – me, me, me, me and me.

Now, don’t get me wrong – I have certainly been able to achieve all of these things. I do work for myself. I do define my own hours and I do work from home. However, my income wasn’t where I wanted it to be. I was expecting immediate results, and I simply wasn’t getting them.

I knew for certain I hadn’t signed up for a get-rich-quick scheme, because there is no such thing. Those people who believe you simply press SHIFT-ALT -F9 and watch your laptop spit out thousands of dollars need their head checked, seriously.

I knew I was putting in the hard yards because that’s the sort of person I am. I am contentious, motivated and committed. I was working on my business for hours every day. Every spare moment was invested into my new venture, and yet I still wasn’t getting the results I desired.

Then the penny dropped; the light bulb switched on; I had an ‘Ah Ha’ moment; and I experienced a completely paradigm shift.

What I realised was that this business was not about me. It is actually about helping other people, and only after I acknowledged that did I a) achieve the results I desired, and b) start to earn an income in this business.

My business is about being the most authentic person I can be. It empowers me to step outside my comfort zone and develop the courage to face my fears and insecurities in order to create the most desirable lifestyle for myself.

But more importantly my business is about empowering other people to do the same. It gives me the capacity to make a profound difference in people’s lives; to change their perspectives on business & life, and to impart some wisdom upon them in the process.

My business is not direct-sales & marketing.

My business is about transforming people’s lives, and I am passionately committed to that.

I sell dreams, and paradigm shifts. I sell the opportunity for individuals to step well out of their own way and wake up to the potential that they simply haven’t learnt to exploit yet. That is what I get paid to do. That is what I do for a living. That is what my business is all about and how I have been able to create the lifestyle I have only ever imagined.

I sincerely believe it is possible for anyone to do what I do; to start their own business; to create their own lifestyle; to be in a position to change other people’s lives; to change their mindset and achieve great things for their lives.
